The UV source is the central element of any alternative photographic process. Its uniformity, power and reproducibility directly determine the quality of your prints.
Why is the UV source so critical?
Alternative processes rely on the photosensitization of chemistry to UV rays (320-400 nm wavelength). A non-uniform source will produce uneven prints. A non-reproducible source makes it impossible to calibrate your exposure times.
The sun: free but uncontrollable
The sun is the original UV source for all alternative processes. However, its power varies with time of day, season, and cloud cover — making consistent results very difficult to achieve.
DIY UV boxes
Many alternative photographers build their own UV boxes with BL fluorescent tubes or UV LEDs. These solutions are economical but present limitations in uniformity and reproducibility.
The professional UV exposure unit: the Luminograph
The Luminograph is the UV exposure unit designed specifically for alternative photography by Vision Picturale. It provides uniform UV coverage, an integrated timer for reproducible exposures, and compatibility with all alternative processes — cyanotype, gum, Van Dyke, carbon, resinotype, platinum and more.
Available in A4 and A3+ formats, it's the tool that transforms a trial-and-error practice into true artisan mastery.
