Bromoil emerged in the early twentieth century and became the weapon of choice for British Pictorialists, who appreciated its rendering close to oil painting. The gelatin matrix, once exposed and developed, selectively accepts Charbonnel intaglio ink applied with a foam roller, zone by zone. The image builds progressively through successive ink layers, which makes it the only VP kit where the print takes shape visually under the practitioner's eyes, rather than through chemical revelation. Unlike Aquaprint layers which are locked from the moment of development, bromoil remains editable for several hours, allowing local density adjustments that are simply impossible elsewhere in the catalog of VP processes.
The VP reformulation removes the copper bichromate silver bleach bath, historically the most toxic step of the process, in favor of a gelatin plus VP N°03 developer protocol. Operational sequence: 2-minute exposure, 3-minute development, 10-minute rehydration at 20 °C, then inking with Charbonnel intaglio ink applied by foam roller. Where gumoil incorporates the pigment before exposure, VP bromoil applies the ink after development onto a differentially swollen gelatin matrix. No other VP kit uses printer's ink: it is the direct meeting point between alternative photography and the printmaking tradition of intaglio and lithography.
