The Monochrome Aquaprint pursues the visual signature of British and French Pictorialism from the early twentieth century: deep blacks, soft transitions, paper texture visible through the pigment. Pure carbon black, applied in only 1 to 2 layers of VP gum, produces a velvety density that industrial silver gelatin processes never managed to reproduce. Unlike the warm Sanguine or the CMYK four-color, this kit aims for the pure plasticity of black on 640 gsm cotton paper. It is also the most economical subset of the Aquaprint family in terms of passes, therefore the fastest route to the final print while keeping the recognizable gum print signature intact.
The VP formulation pairs the pre-sensitized gum with a finely ground carbon black pigment, applied with a wide brush to preserve the gestural mark. Exposure 2 to 5 minutes per layer, development in diluted VP N°03 developer, clearing at 40 °C: standard Aquaprint protocol, but reduced to a maximum of 1 or 2 passes. Where VP four-color printing requires millimetric registration across four layers, the Monochrome tolerates approximate registration and remains accessible to the intermediate practitioner. Free of potassium dichromate, consistent with the entire VP reformulated chemistry, practiced over the kitchen sink with no air extraction or dedicated respiratory protection equipment.
