Monochrome carbon transfer was invented by Briton Joseph Swan in 1864, and remains to this day the non-silver photographic process offering the highest density, the highest dMax of all alternative processes. The print shows a slight bas-relief visible in raking light, the physical signature of pigmented gelatin transfer onto 640 gsm cotton paper. Its archival permanence is measured in centuries, a claim no other VP kit can make: neither gum, nor cyanotype, nor bromoil reaches this stability. It is explicitly the museum print process, designed for works destined for institutional collections or long-term heritage transmission across multiple generations of curators and conservators.
The VP kit delivers a sheet of black pigmented gelatin ready for exposure, a dedicated transfer paper, and a final 640 gsm cotton support free of optical brighteners. Exposure under the Luminograph, contact with the transfer paper, development in warm water which removes the unexposed gelatin, then transfer to the final support: the sequence demands thermal rigor but mobilizes no toxic product, unlike Swan's historical dichromate-based process. Where Carbon CMYK — Deep Colour chains four CMYK passes, the Carbon Mono — Museum Black concentrates the entire chemistry on a single gelatin, which makes it the VP kit of maximum density achieved in a single transfer operation, without successive layer registration.
